Most Christians give a formal assent to the belief in the Holy Spirit. They do this al least every time they repeat the Apostles' Creed, in on no other occasion. But what they actually mean when they declare, "I believe in the Holy Spirit (or in the Holy Ghost)," too many of them would be perplexed to say. Books on the subject are numerous, but they do not greatly help at the point where help is most needed. The more scholarly treatises are beyond the range of the average Christian. At the other extreme are books characterized rather by ferver and imagination than by clarity of exposition. "What meaneth this?". Spirit and divine activity. Spirit and the Bible. Spirit and conviction. Spirit and prayer. Spirit and human barriers. Spirit and the common life. Spirit and the ministering spirits. Spirit and the communion of saints. Spirit and christian perfection.
